Quick Poll: Results Are In!
In August we asked for your opinions in our poll. Here are your responses.
1. Have you seen a spike in your business since the IRS mailed stimulus checks to 130 million taxpayers?
Some 95% said that they did not see an increase in their businesses resulting from the tax rebate checks. But research shows that the typical family increased spending by 3.5% when their rebate arrived, boosting overall nondurable consumption by 2.4% in the second quarter.
2. How do you see the economy six months from now?
Respondents were not upbeat in their economic outlook. "This isn't surprising given that Congress has failed to address such critical issues as rising health care and gas costs," says Chamber Chief Economist Martin Regalia.
3. What are your hiring plans for the next six months?
About two-thirds of the respondents plan on maintaining their current employment levels over the next six months, up from February. However, the percentage of employers planning layoffs has risen, and the percentage planning to hire additional workers has declined.
4. Have economic conditions affected your vacation plans?
Some 70% indicated that either high fuel prices or the sluggish economy forced them to forgo or scale back vacation plans. Twenty-eight percent cited fuels costs.
