Lawmakers Consider Tax Repeal-
At the urging of business groups, state lawmakers are considering a bill to repeal a flat $250 tax on state businesses. The tax, which applies primarily to small companies and LLCs, was enacted six years ago to cover a shortfall in the budget.

Idaho
Business Equipment Tax Bill Advances-
Senators have unanimously backed a plan to exempt businesses from paying taxes on the first $75,000 of their personal property. Dumping the tax will exempt 86% of Idaho businesses from paying any personal property tax. The state plans to reimburse local governments the $15.5 million they stand to lose.

Employers Scramble for Tourism Workers-
Seasonal businesses on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard are scouring other states and cities for summer workers. Some businesses are delaying openings, cutting hours, and making plans to get by with fewer employees.

Voters Support Health Care Mandate-
Three out of every four registered voters in New Jersey support a mandate requiring employers to help uninsured workers purchase health care coverage, according to an AARP New Jersey survey.

Texas
Unemployment Tax Suspended-
Gov. Rick Perry (R) suspended the state unemployment insurance "replenishment" tax for the rest of the year, saving businesses $260 million in unemployment taxes. In recent months, he also directed the state to rebate $170 million that employers paid into the $1.6 billion trust fund in 2007.
