Imagine …

A Healthier America at a Lower Cost

Paul S. Speranza Jr.
Chairman of the Board
U.S. Chamber of Commerce

"Imagine" is the most powerful word in the English language. Imagine a healthier America at a lower cost.

The U.S. Chamber continues to do significant work in health care to create value. It provides meaningful information on how to positively impact your organization's health care costs. Did you know that 50% of America's health care costs are derived from our own behavior, but we spend only 5% of our health care dollars on prevention? Eating the right amount of the right foods, exercising, not smoking, and obtaining proper medical care all help reduce health costs.

Almost three years ago, the Chamber and the American Hospital Association convened a group of national health care thought leaders. Their task was to recommend wellness and prevention programs that could be put into place in local communities relatively quickly, at relatively low cost, while not requiring changes in laws or regulations. My hometown, Rochester, New York, working through the local chamber, had great success in implementing some of the ideas from the meeting, including a wellness program in which 42,000 employees from 120 companies participated.

The Chamber also creates value by working to enact legislation that improves health care quality, affordability, and accessibility. By working collaboratively with individual companies, local chambers, and other business organizations, the Chamber gets it done. Visit www.uschamber.com/healthcare to learn how.
